ANKARA/ISTANBUL, March 25 — Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said yesterday that protests over the jailing of Istanbul's mayor had become a "movement of violence" and that the main opposition party would be held accountable for injured police officers and damage to property.

ISTANBUL, March 24 — A Turkish court yesterday jailed Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, President Tayyip Erdogan's main political rival, pending trial on corruption charges, in a move likely to inflame the country's biggest protests in more than a decade.
